Service History · Regular and Reserve

Once a SPR, always a SPR.

I left school in 1987 for a Heavy Diesels Fitter apprenticeship in the Royal Engineers, served 25 years in the Regular Army as a Sapper, then 9 more in the Reserve.

The early years were heavy plant, generators, turbines and compressors, kept running a long way from anywhere with whatever was to hand. Then 22 months at the Royal School of Military Engineering and an HND in Building Services took me from the spanners to running projects. I finished as a Works Services Manager in Brunei, with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1).

Postings took me to the Falklands, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan and Brunei. A few that stuck:

HelmandWorks Contracts Officer, Provincial Reconstruction Team. $70M of schools, health centres and roads, with the Foreign Office.
IraqCommander's Commendation, for supporting the Coalition Provisional Authority's reconstruction programme.
Brunei£5M a year of works across 2,000+ assets, with 32 staff.
CanadaC$7M of projects, including a new data centre, an Apache hangar and a runway fire station.
FalklandsMaintained a 60M-litre fuel depot and a 12km overland aviation fuel pipeline.
Cumbria floods, 2009A 36m bridge in within two weeks.
